Weaving can be balanced or unbalanced, but it still hangs together. The color and texture of the weaving materials can express vibrancy, even joy. Weaving can pay homage to tradition without copying it.
In my work, I explore the materiality and color of weaving inspired by Guatemalan textiles. Ideas of connectivity are central to my work: I integrate contrasting textures that can be woven together freely. My color story emphasizes the inspiration of a sunset, with bright oranges and pinks. I want to create work that makes the wearer feel “embraced” and comforted, while also introducing exaggerated silhouettes. In an era of tension and anger in our culture, I want to offer my wearer a cocoon of happiness and play in these clothes.
